This is not a fair experiment to run, so it is not surprising that you reached a conclusion that contradicts my experiences.

As manufacturers, we are in a better position to run experiments with all of the variables controlled. For what it's worth, the output stage and power supplies in our CD players are essentially identical to those in our preamplifiers. So your conclusion that a passive preamp would work if the CD player were designed differently is not correct, in my experience.

I'm sticking with what I wrote in my earlier post. So, for example, if you only have $1000 to spend on a preamp, a passive will yield better overall results than an active. Indeed, a $1000 passive will yield better overall results than some mediocre $10,000 active preamps (of which there are more than there should be). However, a really top-notch $10,000 active will sound significantly better than any passive, regardless of how the output stage of the source is designed.
