You might be better served with an SLP-98. With direct coupled, hexfed and cap mods, its a very nice preamp. I am going to test the Ref 8s and Channel Islands D-100s in my system in January. I'll get some objective evaluations also since I'm going to A/B both amps at an Audio Circle meeting at my house the second weekend in January. I'll also compare them to my Cary V12R w/ cap mods.
I'm interested in these amps for the heat issue. The V12R is my baby in the winter time and when its cool. It puts out a lot of heat. I added an extra HVAC vent in my audio/puter room and its still warm with the V12 running. These two amps run cool, and would make great inexpensive "summer" amps.
