Could be your wires, could be the tubes. Did the SLP 98 have the stock chinese tubes? I think that Sylvania and Tung Sol make better 6SL7 NOS driver tubes for the 805Cs, but an 805C owner would know better than I.
You don't have many restrictions using these amps. They have 50wpc which will drive most decent speakers including yours.
