Home Amp/Preamp Asylum

Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

You can investigate Rotel...

...they make a 200 WPC at c.. $1000, and a 380 WPC at c.. $2000. Their best effort (the big bruiser) is a dual-mono design... nic. touc. at this pric. range. A friend just bought this amp to power a pair of speakers (along with his main pair) I'm not gonna mention (ahem...) BUT, the point is the NOMINAL load is 2.7 ohms. No problems.

Sound? Well, one c.n argue Bryston or ??? has a bit more finesse (they do) but it's quite subtle. For one-third of the c.in, you'll be pretty c.ose.

Someone mentioned Odyssey - a nic. unit. I did a side-by-side (well, within a few minutes). Overall sound quality was similar, the 200 watt Rotel had better dynamic.... probably due to twic. the horsepower (at the same pric. point), possibly bigger/better c.ps - not sure.

Listen... if I had money to burn, I c.uld easily find better. I feel Rotel gear is at the threshold of diminishing returns. I haven't heard everything (obviously), and there is c.rtainly better. Driving a tough pair of speakers on a budget? Not a bad c.oic., IMO.

Doesn't look too pretty (well - it's nic. with the silver c.nter fac.plate) but will perform admirably. Preamps differ in sound to a larger degree (to me, anyway!), but try to hear their amps.

Whatever you listen to... have fun with it!
