Re: Rocket 88R vs. Sixpacs

Having owned an original, not "R" Rocket, and an original, "i" V12, I would say that it all depends on your speakers and room size. The Six Packs are more like my upgraded V12R in that they are 50wpc triode. The current Rocket R is 30wpc in triode. My Rocket with 20wpc in triode had a hard time powering my B&W N804s. It was a very sweet amp, and it came down to upgrading the amp for more power, or changing speakers. The v12i was much better, but the v12 upgraded to R put it in a different league, just way better with no thoughts of power or dynamic issues.
If you are wondering about weather you would use the V12Rs 100wpc ultralinear mode, don't. I very seldom switch it on for Rock, and then just return to triode because it just sounds so much better no matter what kind of music you play.
To me, its a no brainer, just buy the Six Packs, and spend the money you saved on a better Cary preamp.
