A brief postscript. I also used to own a Threshold amplifier -- in my case, an S200 (or was it labeled as S250? I cannot recall). At the time, I was living with my girlfriend (who is now my wife) in West Philadelphia. As you may be aware, the Threshold amplifiers were designed by Nelson Pass, who left Threshold to found Pass Labs. I thought that that amp was very nice as well.
Anyway, one day I return home to find that thieves had broken in and had managed to steal only two things -- that Threshold amp and an Amber Series 70 amp I had in reserve. The doors and windows to the apartment were all locked. I called the police, knowing that I had to have a police report to file an insurance claim. When the policemen arrived (in West Philly, they always travel in pairs) I explained to them that I suspected that some of the apartment staff had perpetrated the crime, since they had keys and the doors had been locked when I arrived at the scene. I showed them where the thieves must have grabbed other equipment, cables and the equipment rack to get at the amps and suggested that someone dust for fingerprints.
One of the cops turned to me and said, deadpan, "Buddy, you watch way too much tv." They handed me the report, left and that was the last I heard from them. I bought the Classe 15 with the insurance proceeds.
For years I secretly hoped that the Threshold would superheat and blow up, scarring the creeps who broke into my apartment. But it was only a tawdry fantasy: in my heart I know that Pass equipment is good for the long haul. Those bastards are probably enjoying that amp to this day.
Oh well.
