If I am not mistaken, the "i" revision took away the gain stage, resulting in better sonics. The "r" revision still does not have a gain stage; but instead, used a higher gain tube (12BZ7), in place of the 6922. Fortunately, NOS 12BZ7s are not very expensive. The 12AX7 and 12AY7 can also be substituted for the 12BZ7.
