Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

RE: I'm not interested in gigabuck equipment I could never own

I am not into spending a lot of money on fancy cars but I have sat in them and the odd time drove in them and I can acknowledge the experience that they're better than any of the cars I have owned.

For instance, if you were in my house and listened to my tubes and to my class D - you would not "hear" any tube noise - the fact that your tube amp is noisy is perhaps one of the reasons Sonic Frontiers went belly up.

The reason to go and listen - even for 2 hours in a shop is so you can not make the idiotic comments you make on these forums all the time. So that you can listen to an all-tube stereo system where there is ZERO audible noise. So that you can listen to a classical LP on a GOOD turntable that you have clearly never heard and heard no hiss or noise or even crackles and pops (albeit this is never eliminated fully) but I can guarantee you that it will be far from the experience you portray from your 50 years of experience.

There are things you can glean in 2 hours - there are things you can glean from one 4 minute track. Especially Classical music.

It's not about being able to afford it or ever being able to afford it. It's just the recognition that yup that thing is awesome - it may be crazy priced to you or me - but better is better - a Bugatti is better than any car I have owned or will ever own - and even if I had the money I would not buy one because it's not for me - but it is better - I can recognize that.

I remember reviewing my turntable thinking wow this is a really expensive turntable rig at a little over $10kUS - I was thinking I was nuts to spend that much on old technology. Then a month or so later Fred Crowder on our staff reviewed/bought a $12,000 Cartridge! He has a much higher paying job than I do - LOL - but weirdly it made me a little happier about what I bought because hey - there are people buying cartridges that cost more than my whole turntable and indeed more than most people spend on their entire stereo systems.

Most people on these boards have financial limits (or at least limit themselves to what they will spend).

It's okay to appreciate things in themselves and not poo poo everything merely because you can't afford it. Moreover, if you hear the best stuff you have a frame of reference where you can try to attain that reference on your budget. I can't afford an Ongaku but I might be able to swing a Jinro - I couldn't afford a Jinro so I got a more affordable amp that shared some ballpark characteristics.

You drive the $150k sports car so you know how well the $30k Mazda Miata or Toyota GR86 compares. And occasionally I read a lot of car experts who actually prefer driving the Miata to the pricey sports cars - it's not nearly as fast but they like the actual "driving" better. So in terms of value - you need that $150k driving experience to know just how good the Miata is for the dollars.

You listen to the $50k amp so you can compare to the Benchmark - and now you may like the Benchmark amp even more than you already do because you turned over the rock and you can say wow I like the sound of the Benchmark more than the $50k Boulder amp I tried. Or you say - well the Benchmark is 90% as good for 1/20th the price! Yeah me.
