Psycho acoustics, is one of the things that makes this such an interesting hobby. There are absolutely some types of distortion that are pleasing. Do some designers target these? Or when it unintentionally occurs do they capitalize on it? I think they do, either intentionally or unintentionally.
Years ago, A friend that spent his entire career in the audio industry, mentioned a reasonably priced CD player that he said sounded musical. So I bought one, the source of what he was hearing and described as musical was its power supply. Was this intentional? Probably not. Did they sell more of them because of it? Yes.
I replaced the power supply with a much cleaner one and we benchmarked it against his stock version. My friend preferred the stock version, he thought the modified one, sterile. So we swapped units. Over time, he began to appreciate detail in the modified one. My perception of the stock one, really didn't change, but I may have been biased.
With this and other experiences, I fall into the camp of design (or purchase) based on both specs and listening experience, but don't be surprised if your perceptions change over time. And with it being so difficult to audition equipment, specs and reviews are all we have.
