RE: How many people ...

There are a lot of knowledgeable people here, that pursue this hobby in different ways. This is common in other hobby's too, aviation for one, some people really enjoy building and working on planes, some only fly them.

I find in audio that component synergy plays an important role in how your system will sound, which is especially true with some speakers. I tried many different amplifiers to find one that compliments the ESL that I have. When I found it, I tried to learn from the experience and make some component and design changes in an attempt to make it better. I then did the same thing with preamps.

Yes I have designed and built audio equipment, but I used opamps more for other applications. But you don't have to have this level of knowledge to gain an understanding of what to look for in equipment. With so few shops that you can go into and hear things, and with so many offerings, it helps if you understand what makes a good component. In this case the discussion was preamps and a particular good one. Understanding that Benchmark focused on the areas of greatest distortion, and this doesn't take a EE to understand, they targeted switches and potentiometers. After that they worked on the gain/impedance matching stage, using extremely low noise distortion opamps. So knowing this, if I was in the market for a preamp, I would look for one that reviews well and uses novel approaches for avoiding selector contacts and potentiometers. And if it uses opamps, I would look at the specifications of what they used.

Funny you should mention chocolate and fish tacos. Few years ago, a report came out on how healthy fish and dark chocolate. So I would joke, we should sell chocolate covered fish and make a fortune.
