I agree - My Audio Note M3 had 23 steps and it would be too big a jump - Audio Note developed 36 Steps and the new ones use this pot.I know the process on making their own Silver resistors was quite a process.
And like you said - while it may work very well in their amplifiers I doubt you can just stick them in any amplifier and assume they'll be superior. Albeit they may be. But you have to try them all to determine which will be better.Still, to make the silver resistors appeared to be a pain in the ass.
