RE: Cary SLI-80 Int Amp problem. Update: solved!

I checked the right channel (RC) tube fuse and it was completely vaporized, no filament at all. So I took all the tubes out, except the new rectifier tubes I just bought (Sovtek) and replaced the Gold Lion KT88 power tubes and the RCA 6SN7 tubes and the Ediswan 6922 tubes. All were replaced with little-used E-H tubes I had on-hand.

Set the bias which included letting it warmup without other components attached. Checked temperatures of all tubes, transformers, big caps on top, and several random locations on the top plate. All seemed normal. No burning smells.

Attached components and listened to tunes for 3 hours. Tonight is second night. All is okay.

==> THEORY: The GL KT88 tubes always rocked a little, i.e., I could move them back and forth easily with one finger. I think they may have been micro-arcing in the socket for quite a while without problems. Then they had a big arc & vaporized the RC tube fuse.

This became a theory because I had forgotten how solidly the E-H KT88 tubes fit down into the socket. I think the center plastic pin on the Gold Lions may be a little too long for the available clearance and it keeps the tubes from fully seating in the tube socket. This is a real bummer because the GL tubes sounded great.
