It's hard to audition anything now, even in what few B&M stores are left. I am interested in a couple of pieces carried by a dealer near me. I was told it would be a $250 audition set up fee, refundable upon purchase, of course. But what if I don't like them? It's one thing if you're buying a whole system, bot not if you already have some components you like and want to work around.
My local shop closed after the owner retired. He wasn't the warmest and fuzziest guy, but if you wanted to listen to a setup, just ask in advance and give him (well, his minions) time to get it together. If you wanted to take it home (at least amps, pres, TT"s, CD players) give him your CC and out the door you went with it for a few days. Never, ever got the feeling he cared whether you bought that piece or not. I guess I was lucky and spoiled at the start of this journey. I gave it up for 14 years while my two girls were little, and now that I'm seriously looking to build a new system it's harder than ever!
I have one brand I'm looking at (LTA) that allows at least a home trial for a couple of weeks, so there's that.
