I've owned my Cary SLI-80 Signature for 8 years. At first I used an Art Audio Vinyl One phono preamp which had a variable gain control. No problem.
Then because I liked the int amp so much I purchased a Cary 302 Mk II phono preamp. It has 60 db gain and does not have variable gain control. It's too much gain for the SLI-80 and my Benz Micro Ruby Z low output MC cartridge (0.3 mv).
I must keep the volume control on the int amp at the bottom of the dial. Maybe up to 7:30 position at best. Otherwise total volume is overwhelming (i.e., not comfortable) for my listening room. As a result, it doesn't have the "drive" that the other phono amp can result in with the gain adjusted correctly.
