RE: 6SN7 vs 12AX7 preamps

I have a big old soft spot for the 6SN7. Remember my time with them very fondly. As far as I am concerned, there are no current manufacture 6SN7's worth their asking price. I would urge you to look for vintage 6SN7's rather than current make.

With an adapter plug, you could also us the 6F8G in place of the 6SN7. They are the same tube except the 6F8G uses a grid-cap connector - thus the need for the adapter. Do be aware though that the octal tube sockets Schiit uses have a reputation for having a DEATH GRIP on the tube pins. I mention this because there is a possibility, if you use 6F8G, that the adapter plug can be a PITA to remove from those goddamn recessed sockets in the top of the Freya or Saga.

As far as current manufacture 12AX7's, JJ's true frame grid constructed 12AX7 (JJ calls it E83CC) is an awesome sounding tube. I tried them in the phono section of my CAT SL1 in place of vintage Philips Heerlen 12AX7/ECC83, and the Philips have not been out of the drawer since. The JJ E83CC sound better than the Philips. That frame-grid JJ is in every single piece of gear I own that uses a 12AX7. They really are that good.
