Are the amps and the preamp both on the same electrical run? I ran dedicated circuits for my systems and install quad plugs, so that the primary component have the exact same ground potential. Another circuit is used for the digital and other stuff.
I do recall some time ago that I'd used some test wires with alligator clips and ran it from the chassis of the preamp to the amp chassis.
Truth be told, I've used cheater plugs and never had a problem. Adding a GFI isn't a bad idea as much as I hate them if the cheater does the trick.
