RE: Are preamp XLR and RCA outputs electrically independent ?

As far as I can tell some pre-amps may derive their SE RCA output by using one half of the differential circuit used for balanced. Hence the RCA voltage output is exactly one half of the XLR output. In that case , if used simultaneously, that particular half of the balanced circuit is being asked to drive two different amplifiers which may not be advisable. I would check with the manufacturer how they have arranged things and also if the two outputs are fully buffered.

In that type of case there is also a practical downside in that both amplifiers would initially have their output set by the preamp's volume control but one would be provided with a signal 6dB higher than the other. Also the input sensitivity and/or gain of the two power amps may not be identical. So in practice the power amps ( or at least one of them) would need to have their own volume controls as well e.g. such as a powered subwoofer.
