If you might be interested in a kit, I can highly recommend Transcendent Sound.
Bruce sells a 300B tube kit preamp that has rave reviews from owners, and at least one other tube preamp kit that is a new design with variable gain - as opposed to volume control.
I built a Grounded Grid with no difficulty, and when I do use a preamp in a system that is the one.
