I had an Audio Research SP-9MKIII years ago that needed lots of gain to work with MC cartridges. It split the phono/line stage gain at 46db/20db. Which worked fine with vinyl, but offered way too much for digital sources. They later added a simple jumper than reduced the gain to the CD input to 9db. Perfect.
You don't need tons of gain for most digital/line sources. Fix the problem at the source rather than putting band aid on it.
