I did tons of experimenting with passive attenuator instead of active preamp. Amps are Transcendent Sound T8-LN Otl tube amp, Quad 909, Musical Fidelity A1 (2008 version).
I did end up deciding that a passive buffer inline (I'm using a Musical Fidelity X10-V3 tube buffer) sounded much better than the CREEK attenuator alone - presumably due to cable and impedance related issues.
You should try a buffer, I would not be surprised if you also found it improved over only a passive attenuator...
