Very low bass is totally non directional. If the crossover is low enough you can stand next to a sub and think it's not working. The bass will sound like it's coming from the main speakers, the directionality coming from the bass harmonics which are higher in frequency in frequency and directional. If the crossover is low enough and a single sub can play loud enough, a single woofer will sound the same as doubles but doubles may allow easier room interaction.
If the sub has a high pass filter and if the crossover is well designed for your system, the sub/main system can be more open, cleaner and more dynamic because the main woofer will not have to move as much since much of the load is taken off of it.
Due to inevitable room nodes sub position is important. A sub with a crossover that allows variable phasing will allow easier room position because you just need to put subs in a good room position and the relationship to the main speakers becomes less critical; the phase control acting to optimize the acoustical connection.
