I also began with the VTV Purifi with Hypex buffers and found strings and brass to sound harsh in louder passages as described in the review (my listening is mostly classical music). The harshness disappeared after I installed the VTV buffer with Sparkos SS3602. I went back and forth between the two buffers and the effect was unmistakable. The amp with Hypex buffers has a very good price and unfortunately custom buffers bump up the price considerably, but I found it to be absolutely necessary.
I agree with other points as well. I hadn't heard my Harbeth P3ESR with as much bass, dynamics and resolution as on the VTV Purifi. The sound is clean and accurate and makes you pay attention, not a lean back and enjoy type of sound and it won't be for everybody. Excellent recordings can be breathtaking but flaws are highlighted in average recordings.
