I liked the symptom, volume fading, then building, sometimes no sound at all for a period of time. In the pool, speakers are about 25 feet from each other, so it wasn't difficult to make out what it was doing. Hearing it in the room with the equipment, the speakers are only a few feet from each other. We listen to a mix of things, some my wife's selection, some mine, and sometimes 88.5 out of Southern California (60's at 6 is great) so when the problem started, not being familiar with a song, I couldn't even tell of it was the way the song was mixed or a problem.
If you haven't heard Quad II's, they are good amps. For me, better with 6l6gc's than KT66's. And better without a bad filament connection.
