Unusual problem - puzzle

I don't know if anyone else is going to like this, but I did. I have a system that drives 5 sets of speakers, mostly outdoors with switching, attenuators etc. Half the year, all of them are on, other half 4 sets, volumes I change a lot. We have a lot of critters here, so chewed wires happen, but not often. What drives them is PS Audio DAC, ARC SP3, Quad II amps. The other evening one channel, on all sets of speakers would change volume on its own, fading, silent at times, building back up.

When I went to see what was happening, I caught it with the channel out, the first stage tube on one of the Quad II's was touch sensitive. Before I established that, I turned balance to silence the other channel so I could hear the bad channel better, when I did, I could hear music from the other sets of speakers. But not from the speakers that are in the room with the equipment. When this happened, I thought, huh, impossible. So I fixed another drink and got back in the pool. But the next day I figured it out. Any guesses? I will post what it was.
