I work on a lot of equipment. About 90% of the time, it is something very simple. Same with availability of schematic, it is helpful, but most of the time not required. Worst case, I have had to trace out part of a circuit, but that is rare. If you can, have someone near you check it out, you may be pleasantly surprised.
