Loudness controls in the past have been connected to the position of the volume control which unfortunately has nothing to do with the amount of compensation needed to 'flatten' frequency response. What is needed is a feedback process that reads the level and flattens the response according to some values such as Fletcher/Munson or more modern ones at our ears.
That will sound good but isn't entirely accurate. You really want to know the recording sound level and compensation for seat distance and I suspect that can't be known.
This really needs a lot of discussion as to what is really wanted which will probably vary person by person and years od work. But if it matters maybe we just need some good(god forbid) tone controls like the old Quad ones or if you don't mind doing tons of adjustments for each source piece some good multi band equalizers. I fret what the cost od high end equalizers could be.
