Does transformer hum hurt the amp?

I recently purchased an amp and in my music room the transformer hums enough that I can softly hear it from the listening position. This is a mechanical hum emitting from the amp, only. Nothing through the speakers.

I've had a similar issue in that room in the past when setting up a computer rig and the culprit ended up being a monitor. I put a cheater plug on it and the buzz that I did hear through the headphones disappeared.

Out of curiosity I moved the amp into a different room and had to double-check to see if I even had the amp turned on. It was dead silent.

Unfortunately, this is not my music room.

I was going to craft some sort of a box with acoustic treatment to reduce the sound. Then I got to thinking: Does the transformer hum, when it's the result of the power from the wall, cause any damage to the amp?

I've got a PurePower 2000 power regenerator but that does nothing to reduce the hum.

So, I guess two questions: One, does the humming hurt the amp? And two, how can I get rid of the damn noise?

Thanks,

Mamoru
