Tubes in the CM

I've experimented with almost every tube there is in the CM.

Yes, even with Upscale's Platinum Plus "CJ test" the Mullard CV4003 in the center is or becomes noisy (they sound great however in the driver slots). RCA or Raytheon black plates stay quiet and sound excellent in the pre position. The best sounding tube for the pre position I found, however, is the Radiotechnique 6189 (expensive now). To me the Tungsram ECC82 is good but a little thick sounding (Tubemonger has a lot in stock at very reasonable prices), the Telefunken too cool.

I like (and use) RCA or Raytheon black plate 12AX7s in the phase splitter positions (up front). NOS Mullards or Amperex sound the best but of course cost a fortune now. NOS GE longplates are very good: the Gold Lion re-issue are similar sounding to and not far behind the GE (a little less smooth up top)

If you like EL34s in the CM, try the Gold Lion re-issue KT66s. Or even better, if you can still find them, the Reflector 6P3S-E.
