It could have to do with the applicability of the "power converter" used. For example assuming the Pioneer device contained a line frequency power supply/isolation transformer optimized for the UK in it's internal power supply, and your friend bought a step down (edit: no step up turn it around haha) transformer to feed the unit while in the US, an undersized step down transformer could limit the power available and degrade the amps capacity to recreate highly dynamic signals into a big load...ie maybe the power converter didn't have enough oomf.Edit Obviously you'd be using your transformer as a step up transformer to drive UK gear with US voltages despite what I originally wrote.Whatever turn it around and you have it. The principle I was trying to express is the same. The transformer must have at least a minimum, or greater, VA capability for the job at hand or could limit power available to the load.
