Please see the thread, Class D mini amps, I started ten days ago after I went shopping for a compact amp for a second system. Didn't get much of a response. Perhaps people don't believe what I wrote, or don't want to believe what I wrote and prefer to believe some cheap amp hukster's spiel, or maybe some people couldn't read a more than hundred-word post.
The specs for all the amps I looked at were complete BS. Think you're getting 50 watts (stereo, 8 ohms @ less than 0.1% THD, 20 - 20k) for less than $200? I'd be amazed. I couldn't find one. I doubt one exists, but I'll gladly be proven wrong.
Read the chip specs, NOT the seller's/amp builder's. If they come with a brick PS, check the voltage/amps provided compared to what the chipmakers spec for full output. Not even close.
An LM3886 amp is probably as cheap as you can get honest watts per dollar. Even those can be poorly implemented and not sound their best, but will at least produce almost 50 real-world watts per side. If properly implemented, they rival discrete amps costing five or ten times as much.
I'm not saying the cheap little Class D amps can't sound good. Just don't expect to get high fidelity performance that is even close to what is claimed by sellers.
