At CES in 1979 David Berning and Murray Zeligman demonstrated David's Audionics BA150 amp for me. The amp had variable negative feedback from 16 dB down to 0. As the feedback was reduced the harmonic and IM distortion increased and the system frequency response became worse. But the sound got better and better with better detail, more impact and transparency and more life.
So with no correlation of measurement and sound I asked if there was any measurement that did correlate expecting no answer. But both replied yes with the same answer, linearity(if 1 volt in gives 5 volts out then the amp that outputs 10 volts for 2 volts in will be better than an amp that does not).
