Hi Aball,
As someone mentioned, Charley passed in November, but I'm happy to answer. While we do have a warranty period on our products, we have considered the ThermalTrak issue something of a design flaw. Even though the flaw wasn't something that Ayre was responsible for and didn't show up until years in use, we feel that its our responsibility to our fans to ensure the product works as advertised: the best product available designed to provide many years of satisfaction. Three to four years for us doesn't define "many." As such, we will always repair any overheating MX-Rs for free regardless of the warranty status of the unit.
Please have your friend give us a call and talk to Gary, who's our Customer Service Manager. He'll get the order set up and they can send them in to the factory for repair. The ThermalTrak parts are now on their 3rd generation, and to date we have never seen this issue happen with this particular generation, so we believe we have the issue fixed permanently now. For what its worth, the Twenty upgrade also stopped using this particular part for fear of reliability, and brings a very significant sonic improvement along with it.
