I recall that TAS did a review of the Yamaha S-801 within the past couple of years. It has the same output power but a more sophisticated digital section. They seemed to think that it was a reasonable value for its cost.
If you can afford to take a leap into a higher price bracket, then the Peachtree Nova 150, at $1500, will give you a much more sophisticated digital section, a decent MM phono preamp, and 150W/CH. It is also smaller and lighter than the Yamaha amps. I have a Peachtree Nova 150 amp myself so I'm opinionated about it.
