With an input impedance of 100K and the AI which touts about 50K output impedance, it's a mismatch.
Aside from the differences you've described between the two AI preamps, the circuit is the same. Some AI's have slightly different output cap values in uf which does alter the sound.
AI preamps have a lot of gain; I'm guessing you already knew that.
