To understand the frequency dependence would require info about the reactance part of the circuit impedance, ie when there are only resistance specs known, there is still missing info necessary to understand the frequency response.
There probably is or was an inductive element in there somewhere throwing a bit of a resonance into the response. Perhaps the new preamp removed the inductance from from the equation entirely or the lower output resistance retuned the resonant peak sufficiently so it's audible character is different.
