To which cables of each type do you refer?
With my former GamuT CD-1, I was able to go the passive attenuator route. I used low capacitance / low inductance JPS Labs cables with good results.
I find that better cables are devoid of a false "brightness" found in lesser ones which at first may not seem to be an improvement.
