I chose my Audio Research DAC8 more from its analog design using balanced zero feedback class A JFETs and multiple isolated stiff power supplies than the DAC chips chosen - a quad complement of 1794As.
Returning to the age old speaker-or-source question, I find that generally speaking, I've always been a speaker guy. That choice dominated the selection of other components for my main system. Having said that...
The garage system, however, takes me back to my first "serious" system when I was 15 using New Advents. I am amazed at how good they can sound once I replaced the Logitech Touch player using its built in DAC with a Raspberry Pi / Allo DigiOne player using a Music Hall DAC25.3. Yes, the DAC uses an op amp output stage, but goes balanced into the amp.
