As one who uses tubes in one system and SS in others, I find the overall question to be one of matching. Generally speaking , those with roller coaster impedance curves like Elacs ( Click here for graph courtesy of Stereophile ) are not good matches, the reviewer found this particular Elac worked well with tubes. So much for rules. :)
The Pass Labs amp would possibly render a more neutral tonal balance while still providing many of the characteristics of tube goodness. While I have not done business with them, Reno HiFi offers a ten day return policy if you would like to audition one in home which is always the best answer.
