Reading the instructions (at least the instructions that have been included with the stereo components I've purchased over the past 40 plus years...)
Then you must ask what they don't tell you. Audio Research is pretty good about providing guidelines when there are potentially challenges.
It's as if there's a secret code among the audiophile elite and you have to "pay your dues" to be included.
I learned long ago that matching gear is critical to ideal system performance and unfortunately, sometimes you just gotta experiment. For many years, I used passive attenuators between a GamuT CD and my VTL amps. Worked great. When I replaced the player with an Audio Research DAC, that magic no longer worked and I needed to once again use an active preamp. Theory only takes you so far...
Well for those who want just plug 'n play, the best way would be to stick with one manufacturer where (presumably) their components play well with each other. :)
