My experience suggests that amplifier source impedance does affect the FR of certain speakers. When I first received the U1s back in 2005, the cretins at the freight company skewered the shipping crates with a fork lift. Damaged the panels and scratched the metal frames. The cores had to return to Utah for repair.
Meanwhile, I took the double New Advents to the main room and hooked them to the VTLs. Yuk! The sound was overly dark and heavy as compared to being driven by a Threshold Stasis 3 - which is most certainly not the case with those amps driving the Sound Lab stats.I'm of the opinion that Advents really need SS amplification although Henry might turn over in his grave knowing that I drive them with 300 watts. :)
Similarly, you won't find me with Sander's designed ESL hybrids for a number of reasons - one being their "Scream Machine" roller coaster impedance curve (courtesy of Stereophile)
Another edit: Even with the compromised top end of the Crown, the old Advents (I purchased my first pair in 1972) can stil produce a pretty neutral voice.
