Bi-wiring or tri-wiring should not affect the load on the amplifier at all, unless there is some manufacturing mistake on the crossover boards that comes into play when the jumpers are removed. (Hard to imagine... but so is "hot McIntosh amp."
The 7270 is autoformer-coupled, and should be completely stable into any load down to 1-ohm. But... as the amp is 26-32 years old, could there be some electrolytics that need replacing? Very curious.
