If you want to learn, start with a kit. Both Bottlehead and Audio Note have kit electronics that are outstanding. There are soldering tutorials online, but it does take some practice to master good soldering technique. You also need at least a basic understanding of the circuit before you mess with it. Anything plugged into the wall can electrocute you or burn your house down if screwed up, so it's a little different from poaching an egg, which also takes practice (and is *so* good when it's just right.)
