Disagree on other tubes

Unlike a couple of the other posters here, I found changing the driver and phase splitter tubes made for a significant difference. Mark O'Brien has also stated that he found these tubes to make a significant difference in sound. Interestingly, I did not find that these small signal tubes made this much of a difference in CJ or Dodd amps.

I've put a lot of NOS, and almost all current production, through my Cronus Magnum and have always heard a lot of variation. I prefer NOS in all locations.

I tried the CV4003 in the pre-amp spot and liked it but the two "CJ test" ultra low noise selections from Upscale I tried both went noisy in this location. Maybe I was just unlucky?

I have not had any problems though with the Radiotechnique 6189 - also from Upscale - that is my favorite. I also like Raytheon black plates here and they too stay quiet.

The CV4003 is my favorite by far, however, in the driver position. Great harmonics and bass.

For the phase splitter, I prefer NOS Mullard or Amperex, with the latter being a bit more transparent and airy as Abe notes. As they're so pricey however, I usually just use RCA or Raytheon black plates, which are also excellent, if not quite as refined.

If your speakers are warmish (mine are the neutral), you might prefer GE or RCA 5814s black plates in the pre-amp position, RCA or Raytheon in the driver slots and GE 12AX7 long plates for the phase splitters.

The only current production I've like is the Genalex. I've tried the Psvane but found them too smooth, almost slippery sounding.
