I have the standard version and I really don't think it has a sound per say.I use it via XLR connectors to a First Watt F-1 and Cain & Cain Abby speakers. Alternatively (I love the output choices on the STP, 2 RCA and 2 XLR) I drive a set of Wright Mono 7s (300b SE) via RCA outs and, in either case,a small powered sub via the second set of RCA outs. In either case I hear a difference, the Mono 7's, of course, being warmer, richer sounding especially on vocals, the First Watt F-1 having more bass punch and extended higher frequencies. But these differences are due to the amps, the STP just gets out of the way, but is super quiet. I don't get anywhere near the unity gain point where the buffer kicks in, but I have turned the volume to max without source material and can hear zero noise on the Abbys (very efficient speakers). The SE version should be better, but I really don't see how. It's an extremely versatile and well made component.
