RE: ARC is staking its future on appealing to the ballooning wealth of 1%'ers

ARC gear has always been expensive. I remember when the SP-10 came out in 1982 for $3500! We all thought the sky had fallen that ARC would dare make something that expensive. Or the D-150 in 1975 at $2,695. Another huge gulp!

But ARC has and does make more affordable equipment. The new LP-1 phono stage is $1,995 and their 50 watt integrated amp, the VSi60, is $4,995 I think, maybe less. This combo while still not cheap is right in the range of a lot of the Chinese made gear we see these days and the build quality will simply trounce the Chinese gear. Performance as well. And of course ARC will most likely be around to actually support and service the gear they build well into the future.

I do think there is some merit to your comments. High-end audio by definition is a luxury item no matter where we might fall on the economic spectrum. No body actually needs this stuff to survive. As the wealth in the West, particularly the US, continues to concentrate in fewer and fewer hands companies like ARC will have no choice but to cater to those that can afford such luxury items if they wish to survive. The new affluent/wealthy in emerging markets will be looking for exclusive goods from American companies since they can now afford such luxury goods.
