The amps to try have a lot to do with how big your room is and what speakers you are planning on using. Also the type of music and how loud you like it played. And finally budget. Buying used is a great way to go.
Obviously choosing an amp with the necessary power will dictate the power tubes needed. I've used amps with KT88s, 6L6GCs, KT66 and EL84s. All have their pros and cons.
There are qualified techs that can bring either of your amps up to standard specs without destroying resale. All older vintage amps will eventually need some work to sound their best and be safe to operate. Let us know what you end up doing.
