For the price, I like many of the tripath amps. You just really have to find the right speakers for them.I've been intrigued by tripath amps since the first Bel Canto, and I spent a bit of time with different Bel Canto amps when they were still tripath based. For my secondary systems, I still use a Teac A-L700P and a Super T (unmodded except for the regulated power supply).
I really wanted to like the Bel Canto for my main system. Wonderfully detailed, great microdynamics and PRAT. The problem is, it had this dryness in the midrange that just killed the music for me. The amp favored sounds to music, if you know what I mean.
The Teac and the Super T have this same shortcoming, but, for the money, I couldn't possibly complain about that in earnest. Instead, I just paired them with speakers with a nice midrange bloom to complement the tripath's character (horns and fostex). I'll like them enough, that I'll probably keep the Teac until it dies and replace the Super T with one of Virtue Audio's tripaths.
But...for my main system I insist on more neutral, extended speakers. Just not a good match for the tripaths I've heard. Ultimately, I hope to replace my class A/B with a digital or other new tech amp; I just haven't found one that engaged me. Maybe icepower?
