Second the thought on passives giving liquidity and removing the edginess that a lot of solid-state actives pre's have.

Not familiar with the one Kurt mentions (and I guess only two other folks are ;)) but I went from Creek to some home-brews to some higher end models until I found one that didn't restrict dynamics or kill the bass. The key was adding a no-gain active buffered stage to the passive attenuator. Then, it really does sound like the best tube pre's (i.e., IMO, the ones that just get out the way and don't sound "tubey").

The buffered passive pre I have was custom-made by Stan Warren, but is essentially the same as the Superphon Revelation III he had in production for a short time about 5 years ago. Really, really nice preamp. It's the one piece of electronics I don't see ever getting rid of.
