This is my first post in the Asylum...
Counterpoint generates a lot of controversy on these pages. Based upon my positive experience owning Counterpoint components (SA-20, SA-3.1) I decided to purchase a SA-5.1, and have the line stage, power supply, and phono stage upgrades done by Mike Elliott. Question: has someone already travelled down this upgrade path, who also has extensive experience listening to more contemporary units? If so, can you draw comparisons between the upgraded SA-5.1 and more recent designs? In addition to the Counterpoint, I considered Manley Labs, Herron Audio, and Hovland. These were difficult to audition in my area, and I do love that suave, musical Counterpoint sound... What contemporary design sounds similar?
