Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

Some questions: Tube life, soft start, standby mode, and warmup times

Victor,

I'm curious as to your design preferences:

1. Do you keep any statistics for tube life in preamps? B. Any comparisons of tube life between constant operation and on and off use?

2. Do you use any kind of soft start?

3. Standby mode with partial heating? B. -How about a three-position power switch OFF> STANDBY> ON ?

4. What do you consider the warmup time required for the best sound? - Wright's idea that tube preamps need 24 hours running time to sound their best seems to me unrealistic and impractical. If this is true, then few people have ever heard their gear's optimum performance and tube preamps are therefore inherently engineering disasters. -This is analogous to a racecar that doesn't achieve it's top speed until after the race has ended !

Interesting topic!

Cheers,

Bambi B

PS: Watches: When visiting a nearby shopping centre one Saturday, they had a "sidewalk sale" and apparently every store was required to participate- put out a table of the junk they couldn't sell. There was a nicely depressing "Grapes of Wrath" quality to it. The amazing table though was in front of the jewelry story- a nice Patek Phillipe ordinarily $16,400 was marked down to a bargain basement $13,800,..

- Only while supplies and the Depression lasts! -Stock up now and save, save, save!
